FREE admission this weekend at Hershey’s ZooAmerica

Alligators, and gray wolves and mountain lions, oh my! See all of ZooAmerica‘s animals for FREE this weekend, January 27 and 28, 2018.

ZooAmerica will be hosting their annual Community Weekend for guests to experience the park and its over 200 animals, free of charge.

The park hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Throughout the zoo there will be many “animal encounters” hosted by ZooAmerica’s naturalists. Guests will be able to see animals up-close, while learning more about the animals’ respective backgrounds, native habitats, and any other questions you or your little ones can come up with. Animal encounters will be scattered throughout the park.

Over 60 North American species are represented at ZooAmerica, so even in the bitter temperatures of January, the animals have all adjusted to the cold weather. Animals like the Gray Wolf actually prefer the cold weather and are known to be more much more active in cooler temperatures. This also goes for the Snowy Owl, whose natural habitat is the open tundras of Alaska and Canada. The Canada Lynx is native to both Alaska and Canada also, but has adapted to the snow and has long legs with big paws, so walking through snow can be done with ease. These are just a few of the many North American animals available to see at ZooAmerica.

If you miss this weekend’s Community Weekend at ZooAmerica, there will be $6 Fridays starting now, and will be available every Friday until March 23, 2018.

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm takes aim at family fun with new attractions

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks, Pennsylvania, opened its 2017 season with five new attractions. The farm’s mix of family-friendly “agri-tainment” was already a sure-fire hit with kids and adults, but the new Round Barrel Racers, Country Road Carts, Paint Ball Range, Battle Zone with Nerf balls, and Twisted Tail Rope Maker add to their arsenal of fun.

My family visited the farm on a beautiful Saturday in August, and after a fun-filled day we are excited to return on a fall evening for pick-your-own pumpkins, flashlight nights in the corn maze and campfires.

Here are our tips to help you enjoy your day at the farm!

Age Range for Fun

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm has activities for all ages and interests. Have a sports fan in the family? Try Corny’s Ball-cade, which includes a football toss, baseball throw, and soccer shots section. Love animals? Feed the goats and hold a baby chick. Want to relax? Grab lunch and picnic on the hill with a scenic view of the farm and the Strasburg Rail Road. Have a need for speed? Whoosh down one of the slides or race your family on the pedal cart track.

Our Favorite Activities

My 5-year-old daughter loved the Apple Blasters. There’s something very satisfying about using a gigantic cannon to hit the broadside of a barn with an exploding apple. It made her collapse into giggles after each launch.

My husband, the avid gamer, loved the new battle zone as he converted some video-gaming tactics into real-world actions by hiding behind haystacks and massive tractor tires while being pursued by a 5-year-old assailant.

My favorite activity was the slides. I’m a kid at heart, and the thrill of a fast slide never gets old. Luckily, there’s a soft barrier at the bottom, because I had to use it!

My 1-year-old loved painting in the water-play area in the Lil’ Farmers Playland. I loved the fact that she was using a paint brush dipped in water, and she dried quickly with no mess.

Our Favorite Food

Homemade cider donuts – they melt in your mouth!

Know Before You Go

Prepare for a full day of fun! The time passed quickly, and before I knew it, we had spent the entire day at the farm. Picnic lunches can be brought in, but the delicious scents coming from the food stands had us trying a variety of farm-fresh foods.

Bonus Fun

Strasburg Rail Road runs right through the park, and you can even purchase a discounted ticket for the train and board at the park! The train runs frequently, and it’s cute to see the kids stop playing momentarily to gaze in awe at the train.

Enjoy Cherry Crest Adventure Farm with your family now through early November.

Stargazing program at Little Round Top in Gettysburg

At 8 p.m. on August 10, Gettysburg National Military Park, with the Westminster Astronomical Society, invites the public to participate in a star-gazing program at Little Round Top, Auto Tour Stop 8.

Throughout history mankind has always been fascinated by the stars in our galaxy. Even during the American Civil War, soldiers and civilians on both sides looked to the heavens for inspiration, solace, and understanding.

This event is for stargazers of all interest levels.  Limited numbers of telescopes and binoculars will be available for use during the program, though participants are encouraged to bring their own.

This free program, part of the History at Sunset series, will begin at 8 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m. Parking is available at Little Round Top, along Sedgwick Avenue.  No registration is required.

For the safety of participants at the end of the program, the public is advised to bring handheld flashlights for use in returning to your vehicles.

Gettysburg National Military Park preserves, protects and interprets for this and future generations the resources associated with the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, during the American Civil War, the Soldiers’ National Cemetery, and their commemorations. Learn more at www.nps.gov/gett

Blue Star Museums in Central PA offer FREE admission this summer to military families

pa-state-museum-mastadon
Mastodon at The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.

More 2,000 Blue Star Museums across America are offering free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The Blue Star Museum program, in collaboration with the national Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense, provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn more about their community, especially after a military move.

“The Blue Star Museums program is a great opportunity for the NEA to team up with local museums in every state in the nation to support our service members and their families,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “It means a lot to offer these families access to high-quality, budget-friendly opportunities to spend time together.”

This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers, and dozens of children’s museums, including newly participating museums: the EdgarAllen Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia; The Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame Museum in Memphis Tennessee; the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in Hagerman Idaho; and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer.

“Whether they want to blast off at a science museum, take a walk through nature, or encounter animals at the aquarium, Blue Star Museums will help service members and their families create memories this summer,” said Blue Star Families Chief Executive Officer Kathy Roth-Douquet. “This fantastic collaboration with the NEA brings our local military and civilian communities together, and offers families fun and enriching activities in their home towns. We are thrilled with the continued growth of the program and the unparalleled opportunities it offers.”

Check out the Blue Star Museums Parent Toolkit:  A Guide for Before, During, and After Your Family Trip to the Museum (created by Blue Star Families)

A list of participating museums is available at arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

Where to pick your own strawberries in Central Pa.

We think the only thing tastier than a locally grown, ripe strawberry is one you’ve picked yourself. So we’ve culled the region for pick-your-own strawberry patches, and present them here, listed by area.

With the mostly warm winter, forecasts are for a strawberry harvest that’s a bit earlier than typical this year — maybe by a week, according to Kathleen Demchak, a senior extension associate with Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences who conducts applied research to help berry growers. It all depends upon the cultural system that farmers use in their fields, she explains.

Check the farms’ websites and Facebook pages, or give them a call to see if their harvests are ready for picking. Then go to it! Because strawberry season is short, but oh so sweet.

Tips for Berry Picking

  • Visit farm’s website, Facebook page or call ahead to confirm hours and make sure it’s open for picking; they may close due to weather or if they’ve been picked clean of ripened fruit.
  • Bring cash. Many smaller farms do not accept credit cards.
  • Avoid stacking many layers of berries in your container; you don’t want to crush them.
  • Stay in your designated picking area and only pick berries that are fully red.
  • If possible, pick in the morning or evening, when berries are less likely to dry out quickly.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen, insect repellent and sturdy footwear for walking through farm fields.
