Study: Medical companies find low costs in York area

The York area is the least costly location in the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions for medical technology manufacturing, according to a new study.

Princeton, N.J.-based The Boyd Co. Inc., a business-location consulting firm, examined 55 areas in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica, comparing costs such as payroll, energy, taxes and shipping.

The study looked at comparable locations for the medical supply industry and included the York area as the home of Dentsply International Inc. and Unilife Corp.

The report also broke down the areas by region, with York ranking the least costly among all the areas in the study in New England and Mid-Atlantic regions for operating a medical technology manufacturing facility.

However, many other parts of the country outside the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions were less costly for doing business than the York area, according to the study.
