A well-known Cumberland County restaurateur is closing one of her two namesake restaurants at the end of the week to focus on the other.
Sophia’s on Market owner Sophia Nelms announced on Christmas Eve that she is closing her popular restaurant on Market Street in Hampden Township on Friday. After the closing, she will continue to run Sophia’s at Walden in neighboring Silver Spring Township.
“The decision to close Sophia’s on Market was not an easy one,” she said in a Facebook post announcing the decision. “The Walden location is growing at such a fast pace, and I realized I can’t physically run both restaurants with the quality and service that is my brand.”
Nelms opened the Market Street cafe and bakery 14 years ago. Sophia’s serves homemade breakfast and lunch dishes, including soups, sandwiches, salads and desserts. Nelms also runs a catering business.
She followed up the success of Sophia’s on Market with Sophia’s at Walden in 2012, a restaurant built within the main commercial corridor in Charter Homes & Neighborhood’s Walden community.
As Charter began to develop Arcona, a large mixed-use community in Lower Allen Township, her daughter, AnnMarie Nelms, branched out and opened Thea in 2016. She called it the “next level” of dining, with a focus on full table service.
Sophia’s on Market gift cards will be honored at Walden. A sale of the Market Street location to another unnamed restaurateur is pending and could be finalized in the next two weeks, Nelms said. Renovations also are scheduled.
