The chief financial officer of a recently shuttered building and remodeling company killed himself, according to the firm’s owners.

Shaffer & Son Inc. owners James G. O’Shea and John W. Yarnall said in a statement dated Sept. 25 that the company’s chief financial officer killed himself.

Susan M. Kadel, who said she is assisting O’Shea and Yarnall with administrative duties, today identified John R. “Jack” Hirsch as the company’s chief financial officer. Hirsch shot himself the morning of Sept. 10 before the office opened, Kadel said.

Derry Township Police Chief W.D. Smith yesterday confirmed that an employee was found dead Sept. 10 at the Shaffer & Son office at 1345 Chocolate Ave. The employee died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Smith said.

“The recent suicide of our chief financial officer and the discovery of accounting irregularities have resulted in an interruption of our normal operations,” the statement read.

According to a phone message at the company’s office, Shaffer & Son closed Sept. 21.

The company is working to resume operations, according to the statement.
