The Rutter’s convenience-store chain is growing, and needs more space for people at its headquarters in Manchester Township, York County.
Rutter’s said Thursday that it has started work on a project to double the size of its current offices, to 23,000 square feet, which will add space for 50 more employees.
Total cost of the expansion project will exceed $2 million. It’s expected to be completed in February 2018, Rutter’s said in a news release.
The expansion also will feature additional space for a technology lab, more employee recruiting space, and an architectural and engineering department, company officials said.
“We have enjoyed strong growth the past few years, and it has necessitated another expansion of our corporate support team to better align with our overall growth,” Scott Hartman, president and CEO of Rutter’s, said in the company announcement.
Rutter’s currently has 68 stores, with another 20-plus stores in some phase of government approval or construction, company spokeswoman Kirsten Dickason Stanley said.
Each new store has some 50 employees. “The corporate office expansion will enable better support for the expanding base of stores,” Stanley said.
Rutter’s has recently opened stores in three new Pennsylvania counties (Berks, Lebanon and Blair), with plans to add stores in two more states, Maryland and West Virginia, in 2018.
The Rutter’s office is on a 23-acre farm adjacent to the Rutter family farm on the Susquehanna Trail, just north of York, that dates back to 1747.
It is the third expansion of the Rutter’s office this decade, with the growth driven by the addition of the new stores, plus the change of Pennsylvania laws to allow the sale of wine and beer at convenience stores, the company also said.
Rutter’s is a privately-owned and family-managed group of companies that includes a dairy and beverage company and a real estate company along with the convenience-store chain.
