The Revere Tavern, a well-known local eatery whose building dates back to 1740, is closing.
Oct. 8 is the last day of operation.
Members of the Cosgrove family, owners of the Leacock Township restaurant at 3063 Lincoln Highway East, announced the news in a Facebook post “with a sad, but very grateful, heart.”
“For the past 58 years, it’s been our honor and privilege to serve so many wonderful customers from both the Lancaster area and visitors to this great county,” the post said. “Many of you have celebrated your family milestones with us and have become friends. It’s a job that has been fulfilling and a job we loved.”
As of Thursday afternoon, there were more than 150 Facebook comments. “I’ve had so many wonderful memories there that I will cherish forever,” one poster wrote.
The family said that the routine maintenance and capital improvements needed to keep the large, historic tavern functioning “have always been significant, but manageable. Since the mandated COVID shutdown, however, and with staff shortages still preventing us from reaching full operational capacity, the ongoing costs of operation are just not sustainable.”
Government programs to help small businesses during the pandemic did provide some relief but it wasn’t enough to save the restaurant.
The Cosgrove family also owns the 95-room Best Western Plus Revere Inn & Suites and the 400-plus-seat Magic & Wonder Theater, which are staying open.
