Retired Pa. judge appointed to investigate claims under NFL settlement

Manheim Township-based Saxton & Stump said the chair of its internal investigations practice will be acting as the special investigator for the National Football League’s concussion settlement program.

The NFL reached a settlement with thousands of retired professional football players last year after being hit with lawsuits alleging it hid information on the risks of concussions.

In September, the judge overseeing the case in U.S. District Court granted a motion by the league’s lawyers to appoint a special investigator to oversee claims filed in relation to the settlement but which could be fraudulent.

Judge Lawrence F. Stengel, retired from U.S. District Court for Pennsylvania’s Eastern District, will work under two court-appointed special masters tasked with overseeing administration of the settlement fund.

Stengel retired from the court in August and has since acted as chair of Saxton & Stump‘s internal investigations arm.

“I am honored to serve as the special investigator in this important case and I look forward to working with the Special Masters and counsel to provide a balanced and careful analysis of any claims activity that is contrary to the purposes of the Settlement Agreement,” Stengel said in a press release.

Stengel also serves as a member of the Independent Oversight Committee for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Independent Reconciliation and Reparations Program, designed to provide compensation to survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
