Of the eight regions identified in the state, the 11-county area ranks third behind the southeastern and southwestern regions, where the economic impacts are about $28.7 billion and $15.9 billion, respectively, according to HAP‘s statewide report in April.
Those regions include larger populations around the cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Hospital and hospital service-related jobs made up 7.9 percent of the 2010 workforce in South Central Pennsylvania. That is up from 7.6 percent in 2009, according to HAP.
Overall, hospitals and health systems provided $98.9 billion to the state’s economy, up 9 percent from 2009, according to HAP.
