Quaker Steak & Lube closes in Cumberland County

Operator hopes to bring restaurant back in smaller format

After entering five years ago, restaurant chain Quaker Steak & Lube has pulled out of Cumberland County — at least for now.

The Ohio-based restaurant chain, known for its chicken wings and auto decor, on Wednesday closed its restaurant in the Gateway Square shopping center on the Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township.

In a Facebook post, the company said: “To all of our valued guests over these past five years, we regret to inform you that the rumors are true. We are indeed shut down, effective today. It has been our pleasure to serve you all, and if you wish to continue to dine with us, be sure to come out and visit us at our location in York: 1411 Kenneth Rd, York, PA 17404. Thank you all.”

Russ Berner, vice president of restaurant operations for JDK Management, the Columbia County-based franchise operator of the restaurant, said the space was just too big for the concept and that the company was losing money.

“It was an isolated location issue,” he said. “We tried to go as long as we could.”

However, that doesn’t mean Quaker Steak is gone for good in Cumberland County. Berner said JDK is exploring other options, including opening it as a smaller express restaurant that could be paired up with another restaurant concept. He believes that could happen at the same location or somewhere else.

“Right now we’re just looking at opportunities,” he said.

Quaker Steak & Lube opened in Cumberland County in November 2013. The York County location in West Manchester Township opened in 2014.

But by 2015, the chain filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by TravelCenters of America LLC — also known as TA.

As of a November press release, the Quaker Steak & Lube brand had 44 locations in 14 states, including 12 in Pennsylvania. The chain was started in Sharon, Mercer County.
