Q2: Construction companies foresee growth in projects, employment

Pipelines are filling up at construction companies in Central Pennsylvania, according to the CPBJ Construction Activity Index.

Three-quarters, or 75 percent, of companies surveyed last month said their project pipeline has grown over the last three months, compared to 58 percent who said the same thing in the first-quarter index in February.

Hiring also is picking up, with 87 percent of companies saying they expect to add people over the next six months. That’s up from 62.7 percent in February.

When asked what new industries they’re interested in entering, respondents’ answers included:

  • “Aging-in-place renovations. This fits our skill set and we feel there will be growing demand.”
  • “Commercial and multifamily residential. Increase in opportunity and demand.”
  • “Health care, warehouses and assisted living.”
  • “High-definition laser scanning – very high demand.”
  • “Marijuana grow facilities – brand new market.”
  • “Retirement communities; high-end residential neighborhoods.”
  • “Solar.”

The CPBJ Construction Activity Index is a quarterly measure of conditions and expectations in Central Pennsylvania’s construction industry.

Responses for the second quarter were collected between April 13 and April 27 from representatives of 54 companies in the construction industry. They included general contractors, specialty contractors, suppliers, engineering firms and architectural firms.

The next survey will take place in July, with results to be published in August. If you are interested in taking part, email [email protected].
