A PPL Corp. subsidiary will develop a 6.4-megawatt, methane-to-electricity generation system in Shippensburg, the company announced yesterday.

PPL Renewable Energy will install the system at the Community Refuse Service Landfill, an affiliate of Interstate Waste Services. The landfill will provide 3.2 million cubic feet of methane gas a day to power four generators. The companies expect the project to be operational by the end of next year.

Methane-to-energy systems at landfills generate electricity from renewable fuel and eliminate emissions of methane, a gas that contributes to global warming, according to Allentown-based PPL.

PPL trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PPL.
