Police fatally shoot man wielding knife inside Chambersburg Hospital

A man who allegedly threatened a Chambersburg Hospital employee with a knife was shot by police and died Thursday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Public information officer Trooper Robert Hicks said in an email that officers were called to the hospital at approximately 8 a.m. for a report of a male patient armed with a knife, who was threatening staff.

When police arrived, the man threatened the responding officers, who attempted unsuccessfully several times to subdue the man, according to Hicks.

The man continued wielding the knife and threatening police as they tried to restrain him. He was shot by police and died, Hicks said.

The Franklin County District Attorney’s Office and Franklin County Coroner’s office are investigating, he said.

A news release from the hospital stated the employee involved in the incident followed hospital policy and was not harmed. No other patients, visitors or staff members were injured, the statement said.

The hospital is offering grief counseling to staff members and patients.

“We appreciate and commend the immediate response of our staff and local law enforcement for their successful efforts to keep patients, visitors, and staff members safe,” the news release stated. “We will in this case, and any case where patient safety is involved, review all aspects of this situation.”
