PinnacleHealth System this week began renovations on the Alex Grass Medical Sciences Building in Harrisburg.
The building at 100 S. 2nd St. will more than double in size with the addition of two floors, from 58,450 square feet to 121,804 square feet, spokeswoman Christina Persson said. The additional space includes a connector walkway to the top floor of PinnacleHealth‘s Harrisburg Hospital, she said.
The seventh-floor addition will house the relocation of Pinnacle’s orthopedic and spine nursing unit with 42 private rooms, Persson said. The department functions in Harrisburg Hospital.
Cumberland County-based Select Medical Corp. is building the fifth floor for its Specialty Hospital-Harrisburg, relocating from 2501 N. 3rd St.
There will be no sixth floor in the medical building to match the story levels of the hospital, Persson said.
Costs are not yet available for the entire project, she said.
Sidewalk preparation is ongoing this week, and lifting of steel beams will start over the weekend, she said.
Harrisburg-based Reynolds Construction Management Inc. and Brasfield & Gorrie General Contractors of Birmingham, Ala., are the general contractors on the project. GS Architects, based in Delaware County, designed the plan.
The new construction follows the October opening of Harrisburg Hospital‘s Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Emergency Department.
