Pappus House raises more than $3 million for new facility

Pappus House, an end-of-life home, will break ground on its new, larger home in Thomasville Sept. 21 with more than $3 million raised through a capital campaign.  

The home will include 8 private bedrooms, expanding the organization’s capacity and mission of compassionate end-of-life. Pappus House currently operates a 3-bedroom end-of-life home on Cherry Street in York Township. 

“The need seems endless at times,” said Amy Jansky, Pappus House executive director. “The most difficult part is turning away families in need. I am so very thankful that we are now able to expand our mission and provide care for more individuals. We are blessed to provide a home where grace, compassion, love, and dignity surround our residents whose care is entrusted to us.” 

Pappus House raised more than $3 Million through a capital campaign led by co-chairs Liz Shorb and Alexandra (Alex) Chiaruttini, and Honorary Chairs John & Maria Polli, Pappus House said. 

 The capital campaign funds supported the purchase of the 9-acre property at 66 Big Mount Road in Thomasville, as well as architectural plans to redesign the facility, which was previously the York County SPCA.  

The campaign will continue to support the renovation and construction of the new home, coordinated by Kinsley Construction, as well as furnishing and sustaining the home. 

Every aspect of the innovative new home has been designed to help dying individuals live as fully as possible, surrounded by the comforts of home. 

Plans include:
• Eight large, private resident bedrooms with ample space for visiting family and even pets;
• Private patios outside each bedroom to enable families to gather outside;
• Private bathrooms for each bedroom;
• Roll-in shower rooms;
• Large kitchen and dining area for families and visitors to gather;
• Administrative areas for staff and volunteers including ample storage space;
• Spiritual sanctuary for prayer and quiet reflection;
• Wide hallways for easy accessibility;
• Children’s playroom;
• Family respite area with featured area for pets. 

All modifications will meet the requirements of a Pennsylvania licensed personal care home and ADA compliance. 

 Pappus House is the only end-of-life home in York and Adams Counties and is the only residence of its kind in Pennsylvania that works collaboratively with all hospice and health providers, Pappus House said.
