Three colleges teamed up in 2006 to train an estimated 700 managers of Central Pennsylvania health-care facilities.

The partners were the Harrisburg, York, Mont Alto and University Park campuses of Penn State University, York College of Pennsylvania and Harrisburg Area Community College.

Training was made possible with support from the South Central Workforce Investment Board, which serves Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lebanon, Perry and York counties.

A WIB panel identified first-line manager training as a top priority among long-term care, home-health and assisted-living facilities in the eight-county region. The agency allocated $380,000 to Penn State Outreach, which manages the training initiative.

Demand was so great for the program that the WIB handed over an additional $100,000, and training was extended to acute-care institutions. A similar program for mid-level managers is in the works for 2007.
