Sheetz was in growth mode last week with the opening of two new convenience stores in two states at the same time on the same day, including one in the Shippensburg area.
The Altoona-based chain on Thursday inaugurated a location in Garner, N.C., as officials also were doing the honors 375 miles north at 8000 Olde Scotland Road, in Southampton Township, outside Shippensburg.
The new Franklin County store sits on a four-acre lot in the United Business Park, off Exit 24 of Interstate 81. That 363-acre park, which has been on the market since 2002, has several industrial projects in the pipeline.
Officials with the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce said Sheetz was the first land sale at the park and the first to open a building.
The Matrix Development Group has purchased 205 acres, and while warehouses are planned, tenants have not yet been identified, according to the chamber.
Founded in 1952, family-owned Sheetz operates more than 500 stores in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia, with more than 250 of them in this state.
Thursday’s double act was not unprecedented: On June 30, Sheetz opened four stores in four states on the same day, including one in Bethel Township, Berks County.
So far, Sheetz has opened or rebuilt 41 stores this year, company officials said.
