Midstate credit unions partner on financial literacy children’s book

Some of Central Pennsylvania’s biggest credit unions have teamed up to bring a children’s financial literacy book to its customers starting today.

“Boxcar Indy Goes to Doggy World,”a children’s book by Tracey C. Jones, president of Tremendous Leadership in Cumberland County, is being distributed by Lower Swatara Township-based Mid-Atlantic Corporate Federal Credit Union in Dauphin County to midstate partner credit unions AmeriChoice Federal Credit Union, Belco Community Credit Union, Members 1st Federal Credit Union and Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU).

The book will debut Friday in branches of those credit unions coinciding with the start of “Financial Education Month” in Pennsylvania.

The partnering credit unions shared the cost of the book, “considering it an investment in the future to promote financial literacy,” according to Mid-Atlantic Corporate spokeswoman Margaret Blankers.

The book details how Jones’ character Boxcar Indy saves enough money to take his family to an amusement park and teaches responsibility with money.

“Our goal with ‘Boxcar Indy Goes to Doggy World’ is to show kids that saving money and investing is achievable,” said Jay Murray, president and CEO of Mid-Atlantic Corporate. “By providing financial literacy tools like this one, credit unions can help children — our future members — learn to manage their finances, but in a fun way.”

There will be community events during the next few months to promote the book at the credit unions, according to a news release.
