Managing Attorney
Kelso Law
As a small business owner, Melissa Kelso said, “It certainly feels like I’m responsible for everything. I practice law more than full time and oversee the functioning of the (Kelso Law) office. This includes everything from managing personnel and payroll to deciding what office equipment we should purchase and which holidays we recognize. It often feels like the legal practice is the easy part.”
She said the increased workload that has fallen upon the legal profession since 2020 hasn’t gone away. “As a mom and primary caregiver of two littles, I face that constant struggle between who needs me at home, who needs me at the office, and the drive to meet all responsibilities. You can’t overcome this – you manage it. I manage it by what I, probably incorrectly, call reverse time blocking. Rather than block my work time, I block off family time and volunteer activities, and work around those.”
Kelso, who opened her firm in May 2016, added: “I firmly believe that anyone who is given a meaningful chance, a chance where hard work can produce results, will put in the work. I’ve been given meaningful chances over the years, and the best way I can demonstrate my gratitude is through hard work and using my position to help provide opportunities for others. I strive to show my daughters, daily, what they can accomplish, to provide a positive, rewarding, working environment, and to tangibly give back to the community.”
