Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. was established in 1996 to help revitalize Waynesboro’s downtown district through support for new and existing businesses, and by providing improvements, events and activities to attract visitors and residents alike to come and enjoy its historic downtown.
With a focus on economic growth, marketing the downtown and the surrounding community to new consumers and businesses, and developing programs to promote current downtown business and property owners, Mainstreet Waynesboro is working to restore the vitality of its historic Main Street and downtown district, making it once again the unique commercial and social heart of Waynesboro.
To achieve this mission, Mainstreet Waynesboro created its One Brick at a Time campaign, a creative and easy-to-manage program that focuses on generating support and momentum for projects that also address a need in the downtown.
Since its launch, the One Brick at a Time campaign has led to a host of transformative and successful projects big and small in downtown Waynesboro that include instilling more lights to walkways, adding more flowers and planters, hosting regular clean-ups and launching a Veterans Banner Program throughout downtown. The campaign’s latest project, which included a makeover of the Zoe’s Chocolate Co. building and the walkway right next to it, was awarded a 2020 Townie Award from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center in the Safe, Clean and Green category.
“Mainstreet Waynesboro’s motto is ‘bringing hometown back to downtown’ and through projects (like these), people are seeing tangible results and taking great pride in the improvements,” said Greg Duffy, president, Main Street Waynesboro.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the One Brick at a Time campaign focused on new ways of thinking to still hold events and beloved community activities safely and without incident. It has also embraced the use of live videos and posts on social media to help Waynesboro maintain visibility during the pandemic, and for years to come.
