On-demand service Lyft launched service in the Harrisburg, York and Lancaster areas at noon Thursday. As a promotional offer, new passengers will be able to use the code “PALOVE” to receive $5 off their first Lyft ride.
The news comes just two weeks after Gov. Tom Wolf signed legislation allowing ride-sharing services, such as those operated by Lyft and competitor Uber, to operate legally across the commonwealth. They had been operating subject to experimental licenses from the state’s Public Utility Commission, which were set to expire early next year.
Lyft had been running in the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and State College areas, and launched in Reading and Allentown last week. Its midstate expansion is centered on Dauphin, York and Lancaster counties, but according to maps on its website, the coverage area also includes parts of Cumberland and Adams counties, including Carlisle and Gettysburg.
Customers can use those maps, or the Lyft mobile app, to check coverage areas and fares before calling for rides. Minimum fare is $5.40, according to the website.
Lyft also offers an application page for prospective drivers, whom it says can earn up to $35 per hour.
The San Francisco-based company, which was founded in 2012, operates in more than 200 cities and says it has 315,000 drivers on the road nationwide.
