Darrenkamp’s, a local family-owned grocery business, on Tuesday said it is closing all four of its locations as soon as November, one of which will be sold to Giant Food Stores LLC.
Darrenkamp’s said it entered into a definitive agreement to sell its Willow Valley Square store at 106 Willow Valley Square in West Lampeter Township, to Giant Foods. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Giant is pleased with this opportunity to open a grocery store at this Darrenkamp’s location and continue to serve the grocery needs of Darrenkamp’s longstanding customers,” Nicholas Bertram, president of Giant, said in a statement.
Darrenkamp’s stores in Elizabethtown, Etters and Mt. Joy will close in a phased approach, with customers to be notified at a later date.
The liquidation process will begin immediately.
“This was a very difficult decision because we will miss serving our neighbors and because of our long history serving the Lancaster community for so many years. Knowing how this affects our customers and employees made the decision even tougher,” Dave Darrenkamp, co-owner of Darrenkamp’s said in a statement.
Employees at all Darrenkamp’s locations will have the opportunity to interview for comparable positions at the Willow Valley Square location, as well as other nearby Giant stores.
“Our family has been in the grocery industry for 86 years and it’s tough saying goodbye,” Joe Darrenkamp, president of Darrenkamp’s, said in a statement. “We extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our customers, employees and supporters.”
