Lancaster convention center and hotel project opening delayed

The long-awaited opening of the Lancaster County
Convention Center and
Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square
will be postponed about three weeks, project officials said today.

The downtown Lancaster
facility had been scheduled to open April 21.

“We’re not really looking at it as a delay,” said Mark
Moosic, general manager for Virginia-based Interstate Hotels & Resorts,
which manages the hotel and convention center.

“Obviously, this is a complex facility; and the closer we
get up to the actual opening of the facility, the more accurate we can be with
our forecast,” he said.

About 12 events will be affected by the later opening date,
Moosic said. He declined to specify the number of hotel room reservations
affected.

“We’re working closely with customers who booked the earliest
events. We want to do everything we can to adjust to their schedule,” Moosic
said. “We might have to put them in alternative venues.”

Moosic said he anticipated construction will be complete by
the week of April 20, with the occupancy certification awarded by the end of
that month. He estimated the facility will open the week of May 11.

“We want to be cautious about actually saying a date,”
Moosic said. “It’s very difficult to (say) ‘This is the actual date.'”
