The former Kmart property on Haines Road in Springettsbury Township was gobbled up recently by a well-known York County real estate developer who, for now, is keeping a lid on future plans for the retail site.

Kinsley Properties last month purchased the vacant property at 1094 Haines Road for $4.4 million, according to York County property records.

Kinsley officials said they are in the process of developing plans to reuse the property, which is just off Interstate 83 at the Mt. Rose exit, though a timeline has not yet been established. The Kmart store closed in September 2017 during a string of store closures announced by its owner, Sears Holdings.

But the Mt. Rose exit and its surroundings are currently undergoing major work, which could open up new development opportunities. The Kmart property has long been eyed by township officials for redevelopment.

Before Penn National Gaming’s proposed mini-casino ended up at the York Galleria mall, officials saw property around the Mt. Rose exit as a possibility.

Kinsley Properties is one of several construction and real estate entities owned by the Kinsley family. Kinsley Construction is the largest of those companies and also the largest general contractor in Central Pennsylvania, by revenue, with $561.3 million last year, according to Business Journal records.
