Karns Quality Foods will welcome shoppers Nov. 13 to its newest grocery store, on State Street near its West Shore Plaza store.
The new store is in the former Capital BlueCross office building, a site so big it will be Karns’ biggest store to date at 65,000 square feet, said spokeswoman Andrea Karns.
The new site is across the parking lot from the current Karns, an older store about half the size. The company has added 15 employees so far, Karns said, and will likely hire another 10 people.
The current store will close Nov. 10 so technology can be transferred to the new store, she added. The new location will keep the same hours: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
New amenities include a café area, a full salad bar, a sushi station and expanded gluten-free products, Karns said, as well as self-scan checkout stations. Karns is partnering with St. Thomas Roasters of Linglestown on the cafe.
“Our meat department, I don’t think you can find a larger full-service meat department in the area,” Karns said. “We’ll definitely serve our customers’ needs. I think it’s going to be a huge hit and a nice addition to the community.”
The new store is about 10,000 square feet larger than the company’s next biggest store, in Paxton Square in Lower Paxton Township. Karns purchased the building a year ago. Terms were not disclosed.
“We pull from midtown, downtown Harrisburg, from Camp Hill, New Cumberland, Lemoyne, so there’s a lot of communities that feed into that location,” Karns said. “We’ve known for years that we needed more space.”
Karns has eight stores in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.
