Instacart launching delivery service in Lancaster County next week

After launching last fall in the Harrisburg-Carlisle area, Instacart is expanding its retail delivery service into Lancaster County.

The company plans to begin on April 19 serving an area covering more than 114,000 households in Lancaster County, mostly in and around the city.

Instacart said it will begin offering delivery of groceries and everyday items in as little as one hour to 13 county zip codes. The expansion effort will also add more than 100 local jobs to delivery people.

“Over the past year, we’ve seen incredible demand in the Lancaster area,” said Sam Donoghue, general manager at Instacart. “Launching in Lancaster gives us an opportunity to expand service in the Pennsylvania market.”

Customers can use the Instacart website or app to fill a virtual shopping cart with items from local stores. Instacart then connects them with shoppers, or independent contractors, who hand-pick the items and deliver them straight to the customer’s door. The customer can pick a delivery window.

For orders of $35 or more, the delivery fee is $5.99. People who become Instacart Express members receive unlimited, free same-day delivery on orders of $35 or more. Membership costs $14.99 per month or $149 per year.

Founded in 2012, San Francisco-based Instacart has quickly grown to more than 220 markets nationwide and partnered with retailers across North America. Its partners include national chains like Albertsons, Kroger, Costco and Loblaw and regional grocers such as Publix, Wegmans, Schnucks and H-E-B.

To serve Lancaster County, Instacart has enlisted a variety of retailers, including BJ’s Wholesale Club, Costco, CVS and Petco. The Petco service will begin April 26, officials said.

First-time users in Lancaster County can use the promo code HEYLANCASTER at checkout to get $20 off an order of $35 or more, plus a free first-time delivery. That offer expires on June 19.
