A historic residence hall is under renovation at the U.S. Army War College’s Carlisle Barracks in Cumberland County.

Young Hall, constructed in 1935, featured 44 outdated apartments before renovations began eight months ago.

The first 12 units are complete. It will soon boast 26 modern, three-bedroom apartments. Each will offer about 2,000 square feet of living space, according to GMH Military Housing, the developer of the project.

The project cost is $4.5 million, said Col. Robert A. Whetstone, the war college’s

public-affairs officer. The renovations are part of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Residential Communities Initiative.

Two other housing projects are under way. The war college will see $50 million in construction through the initiative, Whetsone said.
