from the Pepsi Bottling Group facility in Lower Paxton
Township teamed to help
repair the Silence of Mary Community Center at 1604 Market St., Harrisburg.
The center will serve as a homeless shelter beginning this
month. Several homeless residents will live in the house, grow vegetables and
work as a family unit, said Sue Gebhart, executive director of Rebuilding Together
Harrisburg.
Pepsi donated $10,000 toward the project, Gebhart said.
About 35 volunteers from Pepsi and Rebuilding Together Harrisburg painted,
cleaned and repaired carpentry throughout the center.
Rebuilding Together Harrisburg is part of the national
nonprofit Rebuilding Together organization. The group renovates community
centers and houses, improving safety and energy efficiency for the homeless,
veterans and more. It also performs disaster recovery and reconstruction.
Rebuilding Together Harrisburg also has opened two other
houses for the homeless.
