In brief: Moving on

After nearly 60 years as a staple in downtown York, Bailey Travel
Service is leaving the city.

After nearly 60 years as a staple in downtown York, Bailey Travel
Service is leaving the city.

The travel company, which opened its doors in 1940s and
moved to its current spot on East
Market Street in 1953, plans to purchase a
building in West Manchester Township.
The building will give Bailey Travel more space to grow, said John W. Bailey,
the company’s president. The firm has roughly 60 employees.

Bailey’s operations, including a travel agency, a bus
company and an airport-transportation business, are expected to begin moving in
August. The move should be complete by the end of the year, Bailey said.

Bailey said he agonized over the decision to leave downtown.

“It’s tugging at the heartstrings,” Bailey said. “I have
mixed emotions.”
