Hundreds of people are expected to visit York County in March for a taekwondo tournament that will deliver a big economic punch.

The county will host a qualifying event at the York Expo Center March 29-30 for USA Taekwondo's national tournament. The event is expected to have an economic impact of $625,000 on the county, according to the York County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Taekwondo is a martial art developed in Korea, according to USA Taekwondo, the sport's national governing body. The national tournament will be held July 1-6 in Detroit. The taekwondo event is the latest in a series of athletic contests York County is hosting as part of a new "Sport York" tourism campaign the bureau has launched.

The bureau is seeking more than 130 volunteers to help with a range of tasks at the event. For more information, call Yvonne Hundertmark at 852-9675, ext. 111, or e-mail her at yhundertmark@yorkpa.org with "volunteer opportunities" in the subject line.
