Since opening its doors in 2006 as a free primary care medical facility for the uninsured of Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties, Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center has steadily grown and expanded over the years.
Driven by a mission “to show God’s love through the provision of primary health care, dental care and mental health counseling to those who cannot obtain health insurance through the marketplace or their employer or due to their ineligibility for medical assistance,” Hope Within serves primarily the working poor, part-time employees with no access to benefits, single moms, servers, cooks, delivery drivers and immigrants.
In 2014, the center added mental health counseling and in 2019, it added an extension devoted solely to counseling complete with three beautifully furnished rooms and a private entrance. Recently, Hope Within was able to augment its already robust mental health counseling to include the volunteer services of a board-certified psychiatrist.
In 2020, during the global pandemic, the center added primary dental services, ranging from extractions and fillings to sealants, cleanings and X-rays, as well as a variety of other treatments that fall under the category of “primary dental care.”
It also added options for telehealth/telemedicine counseling and HIPPA compliant primary care to not interrupt the continuity of care while working within the confines of a global pandemic.
Funded solely by individual donors and by the generosity of local churches, civic groups and businesses, and thanks to the generous volunteer time of more than 50 licensed professionals, in 2021, Hope Within was able to provide, free of charge, 1,182 medical visits, 1,695 prescription medications, 202 dental visits, 734 counseling sessions and 82 psychiatric visits.
