A Carlisle-area contractor has started on a $1.8 million renovation at the historic First Evangelical Lutheran Church in downtown Carlisle.

Galbraith/Pre-Design Inc. is building a new two-story atrium, elevator and renovating the interior of the church.

First Evangelical celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2015. It has been located at East High and South Bedford streets in Carlisle since 1901.

The addition and renovation work, which is expected to be complete by mid-April 2019, will improve church accessibility as well as flow and functionality for church functions. First Evangelical hosts pre-school, concerts and shelters the homeless during winter months.

“Our congregation has a heart for ministry to the neighborhood and community, but the lack of accessibility within our building has sometimes limited what we have been able to do,” Pastor Lisa Leber said in a statement.

Galbraith/Pre-Design also is overseeing the nearby construction of The Concours at Carlisle, a luxury condo project designed for car collectors.
