Hershey’s to back U.S. women’s field hockey team

The Hershey Co. announced it will sponsor the U.S. Women's National Field Hockey Team, which trains in Lancaster County about 30 miles from Hershey's corporate headquarters. Two local organizations are teaming up with an eye on capturing gold in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which are slated to begin Aug. 5.

The Hershey Co. of Derry Township announced it will be sponsoring the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Team, which trains at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster County about 30 miles from Hershey’s corporate headquarters.

Hershey officials said the team’s local ties were an important factor in the company’s decision to sponsor the team. About half of the USA field hockey team is from Pennsylvania.

Two team members — Jill Witmer (Penn Manor High School) and Alyssa Manley (Warwick High School) — are Lancaster County natives.

Earlier this year, Hershey announced it would sponsor Olympic hopeful swimmer David Nolan, a former Hershey High School star.

“We are excited to expand our hometown support by adding the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Team to our roster of athletes,” David Palmer, Hershey’s director for consumer promotions and planning.

Hershey’s also has sponsorship agreements with gymnasts Simone Biles and Shannon Miller and wrestler Jordan Burroughs. The company also sponsors the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team.
