Heavy rain closes Hersheypark, Knoebels

Two amusement parks in Central Pennsylvania — Hersheypark and Knoebels Amusement Resort — have closed today due to heavy rainfall and flooding over the past few days.

Through its social media channels, Hersheypark officials said the Derry Township park and its related ZooAmerica are closed today.

On Twitter, officials tweeted: “Unfortunately, due to the excessive rainfall over the past three days and localized flooding, Hersheypark and ZooAmerica will be closed Monday, July 23 for the safety of our employees and guests. Any additional changes to operating schedules will be provided here when available.”

Park officials say they are monitoring the weather for potential reopening of the park on Tuesday. Heavy rain and flooding are in the forecast over the course of the week, according to ABC27.

“We’ll be evaluating the conditions throughout the day and we’ll be providing additional information as it becomes available about tomorrow,” said Kaylee Dugan, a park spokeswoman.

Flooding last shut down Hersheypark in 2011 during Tropical Storm Lee. That was Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, 2011.

Meanwhile, Knoebels posted on Facebook: “We are closed today, July 23. We’ll reach out later today with some updates.”

The Facebook post for the park, which is near Elysburg, said officials are hoping to reopen tomorrow, weather permitting.
