Cumberland County-based Holy Spirit Health System plans to roll out a physician-order entry system tomorrow that it hopes will boost efficiency and improve health care quality.
The system will allow physicians to enter orders, such as prescribed medications and instructions for physical therapy, directly into computers, including electronic tablets. Traditionally, doctors write orders on paper, and then another person enters them into a computer.
Holy Spirit’s physician-order entry program will begin in the orthopedic area of the hospital, and additional doctors should get on board within a couple of weeks, said Kevin Peters, the system’s manager of clinical applications. “We’ve had a lot of interest from physicians,” he said. “They want to do this.”
