Lancaster-based HDC MidAtlantic has expanded its footprint into Northeastern Pennsylvania with the acquisition of five affordable housing communities.
HDC said the communities, totaling 153 apartments in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, were acquired from the Diocese of Scranton to ensure their continued affordability.
The communities are Saint Catherine Manor Apartments in Scranton; Saint John Apartments in Wilkes-Barre; Saint Vincent Apartments in Plymouth; Saint Stanislaus Apartments in Nanticoke; and Saint Thomas Court Apartments in Hazleton.
“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to preserve these affordable housing communities in Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Dana Hanchin, president and CEO of HDC. “HDC receives more than 100 inquires a day for affordable apartments across our three-state footprint. While we do the work of creating new housing communities, it is just as critical that we preserve existing apartments to ensure high-quality, long-term affordable housing for residents.”
HDC and the Diocese have been in conversation about the transition of these communities since 2020.
In June, HDC was awarded $400,000 in Pennsylvania Housing Affordable and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) funding from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency to invest in capital improvements to these developments. In 2023, HDC will apply for funding from the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program to bring $14 million to upgrade building systems, energy efficiencies and various apartment upgrades.
HDC will also offer on-site resident services at the communities to connect individuals with local resources that support their health and wellness, maintain housing stability, promote economic mobility, engage them in leadership opportunities, and help build community.
