Harrisburg University of Science and Technology raised the bar this weekend for collegiate esports programs in Pennsylvania.

The HU Storm came in first in two games played at the first-ever PA Cup, a state esports championship hosted by HU. Teams competed in three games overall.

The Storm topped the University of Pennsylvania in the League of Legends final and Drexel University in the Overwatch final. League of Legends is a multiplayer battle-arena video game, while Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer video game.

Drexel, meanwhile, edged out Lafayette University to capture the Hearthstone tropthy. Hearthstone is a video game involving collectible digital cards.

More than 30 varsity and club teams from 16 colleges and universities across Pennsylvania — from Penn State University and Villanova University to Lebanon Valley College and Kutztown University — competed in the two-day event.

There has been an explosion of esports in the midstate and across the commonwealth over the last year. The PA Cup was created to capitalize on that momentum, which also is reflected at the professional level in Central Pennsylvania.

The winning schools’ names will be engraved on an official state championship trophy that will be on display at the state Capitol in Harrisburg.
