A new neighborhood grocery store will open this week in downtown Harrisburg.
Developed by local entrepreneurs Shaun Donovan and Adam Porter, Provisions will hold its grand opening Wednesday in Strawberry Square. It’s the first grocery retailer to spring up in the city’s business district in several decades.
Provisions will be open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. It will focus on fresh produce, dairy and meats, in addition to natural products and cleaning supplies, including organic options and a section that accommodates people with food allergies.
The store will sell food mostly in bulk, allowing shoppers to select specific amounts of products they want to buy while also reducing food and packaging waste.
Donovan is the director of regional workforce development partnerships at the Harrisburg Regional Chamber and Capital Region Economic Development Corp. He also owns Appalachian Organics, a web-based store for natural products that has been open since 2013.
Porter is the co-founder of Startup Harrisburg, a co-working space in Midtown Harrisburg, and manager of the Midtown Cinema.
Provisions is not the only new business to open in the square this week. A soft opening is being held Monday for Freshido, a fast-casual Asian restaurant.
