Giant opens beer and wine section in Shrewsbury store

Giant Food Stores continues to add beer and wine sections to its stores across Pennsylvania, this time with an addition in York County.

Cumberland County-based Giant today opened a Beer & Wine Eatery at its Shrewsbury store in Hopewell Township. It brings to 77 the number of Giant and Martin’s stores now selling beer and wine in Pennsylvania.

As part of the addition, Giant also completed a remodeling and expansion project at the store. Giant expanded the store by 4,000 square feet.

A 2010 state Supreme Court ruling upheld supermarkets’ right to sell beer, including takeout, at in-store restaurants that meet certain specifications. Giant, Weis and Wegmans were among the chains that soon began exercising that right.

Giant’s first midstate location to offer beer was its East Market Street store in York, in March 2012.

Giant’s Mechanicsburg-area store on the Carlisle Pike was the chain’s first location to add wine to its beer garden, in September 2016, following passage of a state liquor reform bill in August of that year.
