The Giant Co. will open four more stores in Philadelphia, accelerating its growth in the nation’s sixth largest city and potentially creating 700 or so jobs.
The Carlisle-based supermarket chain plans a 32,000-square-foot Heirloom Market, a small format grocery store, in the Fashion District at 801 Market St.; a 46,000-square-foot store at Columbus Boulevard and Reed Street; a 50,000-square-foot store at North Broad and Spring Garden streets; and a 40,000-square-foot store at South Broad Street and Washington Avenue.
Store amenities and opening dates will be announced later. Giant will have 10 total stores in Philadelphia when the new stores are finished, plus an e-commerce fulfillment center.
“The Giant Company is committed to Philadelphia and this expansion across our family of brands exemplifies our strategy in action,” Nicholas Bertram, Giant president, said in a release. “We’re excited about our future in Philadelphia and to be expanding across the city, with stores designed for both families and commuters that meet the needs of each unique neighborhood.”
Giant employs 27,000 people in Pennsylvania. The company anticipates that the number working in Philadelphia will more than double – to around 1,300 – with completion of the four new stores, the release said.
In March, Giant opened the Riverwalk Giant, its 65,000-square-foot, two-level urban flagship store in Center City. Renovations are also underway at the new Giant Direct e-commerce fulfillment center on Island Avenue, which will provide more capacity, faster service and room to grow home grocery delivery.
