FedEx Ground opened a 981,000-square-foot automated station in Penn Township, Cumberland County, with 190 employees and plans to hire an additional 125 for the holiday season.
FedEx Corp.’s ground delivery subsidiary said this week that it completed work on the automated facility at 951 Centerville Road. It was designed to add package capacity — up to 15,000 packages per hour — and is expected to improve customer service as e-commerce continues to grow.
While the facility recently opened with 190 workers, FedEx plans to expand that to 315 for the holiday season with a mix of part- and full-time package handlers.
“We continue to invest in our people, facilities and technology to address the industry capacity shortage and support our growing customers,” said Scott Burns, vice president of regional operations. “This strategically-located new facility in Carlisle incorporates the latest automation and material handling systems to enhance the service we provide to our customers throughout the Eastern region.”
Since June 2021, FedEx Ground has launched expansion projects expected to add nearly 14.4 million square feet of sorting capacity in time for the holiday season—a direct response to the explosive growth of e-commerce.
The new Penn Township autostation is one of 155 fully automated facilities in the company’s network affecting more than 97% of daily package volumes.
