Excel Homes, a Cumberland County-based homebuilder, today
announced plans to buy a Maine
company.

Excel Homes plans to purchase Oxford Homes Inc., another
modular home manufacturer, to expand in New England,
according to Excel.

In April, Oxford
halted production and laid off more than 150 employees. Excel Homes plans to
reopen Oxford’s
40,000-square-foot manufacturing plant, which will be operated by AvisAmerica, Excel
Homes’ modular production division.

Oxford
was purchased by Michigan-based Eco Building Systems in 2007.

It is unknown when the deal would close and how many
employees Excel would hire back to the Oxford
plant. Production there would increase along with demand, according to the
company.
