‘Equipment malfunction’ leaves BB&T customers unable to use ATMs, digital banking

BB&T Corp. is reporting an outage of its ATMs, online banking, mobile banking app and automated phone service.

BB&T yesterday afternoon acknowledged the problem on its Twitter account, apologizing for the inconvenience and saying that it is working to restore services.

The North Carolina-based bank said the issue was caused by an equipment malfunction in one of its data centers and has no reason to believe the issue is related to cyber security.

Customers can still use their debit, credit and prepaid cards, according to the bank’s website.

“If you’ve incurred any fees or experienced any issues directly related to this outage, we will work with you to address those issues as our systems come back online,” the bank said in a Tweet.

Representatives from BB&T could not immediately be reached for comment.

According to its most recent earnings report, BB&T posted net income of $2.42 billion for 2017. That is down from $2.44 billion in 2016.

BB&T has $221 billion in assets and operates over 2,100 branches in 15 states and Washington, D.C. It has been doing business in Central Pennsylvania since taking over the former Susquehanna Bancshares Inc. in 2015
