Environmentalists familiar with area will agree
I would like to thank Joel Berg and congratulate him for bringing some balanced attention to the issue of the wind farms planned for Wayne County. I see that the article ran as the lead story on the front page, and my opinion is that the whole thing was very well done. (“Against the Wind,” April 5).
I think our position was well represented in the article, but I would like to point out one aspect of the story that is somewhat inaccurate.
Near the conclusion of the article, you alluded to the fact that we are at odds with other environmentalists on this issue.
This is only partially correct. I don’t know of any local environmental group (and there are several) that is in favor of putting windmills in this location.
More importantly, most of them, including the Sierra Club and C.A.R.E., both of whom were active and successful in fighting industrial development of the Moosic Range a few miles south of this project’s proposed location, have taken a position against this project. R.E.S.C.U.E, in other words, is not at odds with any other environmental groups familiar with the area in question.
We are only at odds with the general perception that environmentalists should be in favor of “green energy” projects, regardless of the individual location and/or circumstances.
The article quoted John Hanger, president of environmental group Pennfuture, Harrisburg. He expressed the view that the environmental costs of this project outweigh the benefits, but I doubt he has ever visited the site in question, and cannot, therefore, appreciate the substance of our position.
However, there is an easy remedy to this situation. I would welcome (and challenge) anyone, including Mr. Hanger, not to take our word for this and see for themselves what all the fuss is about.
Thanks again for you interest in this issue.

treasurer
Wayne/Susquehanna R.E.S.C.U.E.
