End of a fitting tradition: Springettsbury Township shoe store to close

After putting its best foot forward for more than 140 years, a Springettsbury Township shoe store is planning to close.

The business, Reineberg’s Shoes & Shoe Repair, was founded in 1877 by Edward Reineberg in downtown York. Throughout its history, Reineberg’s has sold shoes and athletic sneakers and catered to clients with foot problems.

Today, the business is located at 1031 Haines Road and run by Edward’s great-grandson, Bob Reineberg and his wife, Bonnie.

With their lease expiring in February, the couple evaluated their plans for the next year and decided it was time to retire.

The store will begin selling off its inventory in a closing sale starting, Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 9:30 a.m. Though Reineberg’s is closed this Tuesday, the business is usually open Monday through Saturday, 9:30 to 6 p.m. and on Wednesday, 9:30 to 8 p.m.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, especially after all these years,” said Bob, 69, noting that the business celebrated its 141st anniversary in March. “My children aren’t close by and we [my wife and I] don’t get to see the grandchildren as often as we’d like, so we felt it was time. I’ve got to do it while I’m still healthy.”

Bob said he has been around the shoe business since he was in elementary school. As soon as he was old enough, he and his brother, James “Jim” Reineberg, went to work for their father, James “Cletus” Reineberg and uncles. Once Cletus retired, Bob and Jim took over. Jim retired in the 1990s.
