Electronics and appliance retailer hhgregg is making a big
push into the midstate.
The Indianapolis-based company leased four abandoned big-box
properties here late last year and is on track to open all four mid-spring,
once renovations are complete, said Jeff Pearson, hhgregg vice president of
marketing.
The four locations are:
- 5125
Jonestown Road, Lower
Paxton Township,
Dauphin County – 33,000 square feet. - 5800 Carlisle Pike, Hampden
Township, Cumberland County
– 39,000 square feet. - 1700 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster,
Lancaster County – 32,000 square feet. - 351
Loucks Road, Manchester
Township, York County – 29,000 square feet.
The first three sites are former Circuit City
stores; the fourth is a former Linens ‘n Things. Each store will employ 40 to
50 staff in management, customer service and inventory, Pearson said.
Hhgregg is taking advantage of the real estate opportunities
made available by the recession to expand aggressively in the mid-Atlantic
region, Pearson said. In all, the retailer plans to open 40 to 45 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland and
Washington, D.C., by April 2011, he said.
Circuit
City and Linens ‘n Things both filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and shut down their storefronts nationwide.
Hhgregg operates 127 stores in 11 states in the Midwest and South. It is publically traded on the New
York Stock Exchange under the symbol HGG.
