A flock of special ducks is about to nest in downtown Harrisburg until September.

Similar to last year’s Dino-Mite Summer program, the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District has introduced a Discover the Ducks Downtown program designed to beautify the city and encourage people to get out and visit local businesses.

The 15 fiberglass ducks will be designed and painted by local artists through a partnership with Sprocket Mural Works. The colorful ducks will be on display beginning June 21 in various downtown locations. They will be downtown through September 22.

A kick-off event, a duck race, will be held at noon on June 21. Downtown businesses will be selling rubber ducks to the public for use in the race on Walnut Street.

Details are still being finalized, but the plan is to float the ducks down Walnut on a slip-and-slide material with water from city fire hydrants.

The person whose duck crosses the finish line first will be awarded $1,000. Funds raised from the event will benefit the Harrisburg Fire Department.

A map and list of ducks will be available at

People wishing to sponsor a duck should contact Leigh Ann Urban at Current sponsors include Kamionka Entertainment Group, Strawberry Square and Penn National Insurance.
