A grand-opening ceremony in downtown York not only cut the ribbon on a new pub; it also marked the official completion of a revitalization project on Market Street that began more than two years ago.
Downtown Inc welcomed The Fig and Barrel Pub to the bottom floor of the former Zakie’s Nightclub at 25 W. Market St. during a ceremony held Friday. The pub had opened its doors in September.
The pub’s owners, Lisa and Nathan Novak, serve up dishes from a wood-fired oven that are inspired by Lisa’s Italian heritage, including Neapolitan-style pizza and Brussels sprouts. Lisa’s father is from Naples, Italy. The couple met in one of the restaurants owned by Lisa’s family.
“I grew up in a family of restaurateurs … it’s just a way of life,” said Lisa.
In addition to food, the restaurant also features craft cocktails and more than 150 different kinds of whiskey along a wall that requires a ladder to get to the top shelf.
The September opening of the Fig and Barrel marked the completion of a four-building, $14 million revitalization project begun in 2016 by Royal Square Development and Construction. The upper floors of the former Zakie’s were converted into seven luxury apartments last year.
Fig and Barrel is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Fridays, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It has a staff of 35.
