Denver-based firm hired to implement Pa.’s medical marijuana tracking system

The state Department of Health has hired the nation’s leading provider of seed-to-sale electronic tracking solutions for the cannabis industry to implement a system for Pennsylvania’s fledgling medical marijuana program.

Denver-based MJ Freeway, a woman-owned company that is serving cannabis clients in 23 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Europe and Australia, will be responsible for tracking medical marijuana from seed-to-sale as well as creating a registry for patients, caregivers and practitioners to participate in the commonwealth’s program.

The Department of Health said this tracking system will allow grower processors and dispensaries to track inventory and the amounts of medical marijuana dispensed to patients or caregivers. The system also will monitor prices paid for those products.

Gov. Tom Wolf signed the medical marijuana program into law in April 2016. It is expected to be fully implemented by early 2018.

Since that historic moment last spring, industry stakeholders have been hard at work.

Entrepreneurs have created businesses to grow, process and dispense medical marijuana, and they have been looking for real estate across Central Pennsylvania, including in Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties.

January represented a major milestone for the state when the application process opened, and for the first-time businesses could put down money to pursue a spot growing, processing or dispensing medical marijuana in Pennsylvania.

The application process closed March 20, and the department is currently reviewing applications.

The department has not yet released any details about how many applications it received or from whom, but it plans to give out the number of applications received by the end of April, according to department spokeswoman April Hutcheson.
