Fun, food and plenty of new foot traffic is slated to hit the Capital City Mall next week.

As part of the Cumberland County mall’s ongoing transformation, restaurant and entertainment chain Dave & Buster’s will open a long-anticipated location on Monday.

The popular chain, which has four other locations in Pennsylvania and 118 overall, is occupying more than 28,000 square feet in the mall. Dave & Buster’s replaced an Old Navy store.

It is the first location in Central Pennsylvania for the Dallas-based chain. The company’s existing Pennsylvania locations are in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas. The closest locations to the Harrisburg area are in Maryland in Hanover and Baltimore.

General Manager Robert Caldwell, who moved to the midstate from Florida to run this new location for the company, said he expects Dave & Buster’s to be a big regional draw for people of all ages and a key piece of future retail changes at the mall.

Caldwell spoke with the Business Journal at a media preview event on Thursday about the company’s fit at the mall (see video below).

Indeed, Philadelphia-based PREIT, the mall’s owner, has been active over the last two years in bringing new businesses to Capital City.

Last fall, multiple stores opened to replace a Sears department store that closed in early 2017. That included a Dick’s Sporting Goods, a state Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection store and a smaller Sears Appliance & Mattress store.

PREIT has been trying to remake the mall with smaller stores and nontraditional mall tenants as big retail chains face mounting pressure from people shopping more online.

H&M also is a fairly recent addition at Capital City.

In addition to Dave & Buster’s, two other restaurants — Primanti Bros. and Outback Steakhouse — are in the works for the mall. Both are slated to open in 2019, according to PREIT.

More about D&B location

The new Dave & Buster’s location has more than 120 arcade games and a sports bar filled with dozens of massive high-definition TVs.

Among the newest attractions at Dave & Buster’s is a virtual-reality platform that currently features the movie Jurassic World.

The restaurant menu includes chef-crafted burgers and wraps, cheesesteak sliders, street tacos and avocado toast. It also has unique cocktails, including adult snow cones, and craft beers.

In addition, Dave & Buster’s has private event spaces to cater to corporate and social group events of all sizes.

The Cumberland County location employs more than 200 people. The facility has capacity for nearly 1,400 people.
