Karns has served in his current position for 40 years. He says he is privileged to direct an exceptional supervisory team that oversees the company’s 10 locations in central Pennsylvania. “This talented group understands the local market and makes our plans work; this gives me the opportunity to look for new ideas and address challenges. With over 1,100 associates, 40,000 products and 100,000 customers visiting our stores each week, it takes an outstanding team to be successful in a seven-day-a-week industry that changes with every holiday and season,” he says.
Being hit with inflationary pressures has been the challenge of the past year. “Food costs have increased faster than retail prices could be passed onto the consumer. Therefore, finding a way to grow sales has been my major test. Karns Food has focused on being the local supplier of Pennsylvania products, like our new PA Beef program. Also, to stay competitive, we have expanded our store-brand selection of Essential Everyday products and are seeing strong double-digit sales growth in this area,” Karns says.
